Nepal : Cradle of Hindu & Buddhist Spiritualism
Nepal is dotted with many Hindu and Buddhist shrines that find mention in the holy texts. Many of the stories in the Vedas and the Upanishads (Hindu holy texts) are set in this tiny erstwhile kingdom. Buddha, the exponent of Buddhism and the ‘Light of Asia’ was born in Lumbini, a small town in western Nepal which is also a UNESCO WORLD Heritage Site.
Nepal’s Himalayan mountains are revered by locals. These high mountains are regarded as abode of the Gods. Both Hindus and Buddhists believe that Gods and divine beings seek the high mountains as their sanctuary, as these are closer to heaven. Climbers are barred from setting foot on some mountains in Nepal as locals believe these are holy ground, the dwelling places of their Gods. For this reason no mountaineer has reached the summit of Machhapuchre Peak /Fishtail Peak (6991m) that lies in theAnnapurna range.
